The Challenge: Algae That Wouldn’t Quit

For years, Needwood’s maintenance team tried multiple solutions. Traditional methods, like applying pond dyes, offered only temporary relief. The pond continued to experience heavy algae blooms that affected water clarity and aesthetics.

In 2013, the course installed its first ultrasonic algae control unit, which immediately proved effective — keeping the pond clear and healthy for nearly a decade. When the original system finally failed in early 2023, algae quickly returned, catching everyone’s attention.

“We never really appreciated how well the unit worked until it wasn’t working for several weeks,” said Cuan Hendricken, Equipment Manager at Needwood Golf Course.

The Solution: Upgrading to SonicPure Technology

Determined to restore water quality while maintaining ACSP certification, the Needwood team turned to SonicPure in April 2023. They installed the latest Pulsar 4400™ ultrasound system — a next-generation unit that emits 4,400 unique frequencies to disrupt more algal species than traditional ultrasonic systems.

This upgrade immediately restored clarity to the pond without the use of chemicals, protecting both the ecosystem and Needwood’s environmental credentials.

“We never considered other options,” Hendricken noted. “Ultrasound was highly effective — and it keeps our pond looking great while staying eco-friendly.”

The Results: Clear Water, Happy Golfers

With SonicPure’s Pulsar 4400 in place, Needwood Golf Course once again enjoys clear, algae-free ponds, healthier aquatic life, and fewer maintenance demands. The course continues to uphold its environmental commitment — proving that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand.
