Overview
Located in Derwood, Maryland, Needwood Golf Course is an Audubon-certified course committed to environmental sustainability. Featuring four ponds that complement its scenic fairways, the course faced a persistent algae issue in the pond by the clubhouse since the early 2010s. With chemical treatments prohibited, managers relied on temporary solutions like dye, which provided only limited visual improvement. Seeking a long-term, environmentally friendly option, Needwood partnered with SonicPure to deploy a sustainable ultrasonic algae-control system that would restore the pond’s clarity and ecological balance .
The Challenge
Despite the use of pond dyes and best management practices, algae continued to plague the clubhouse pond for over a decade. In 2013, Needwood installed its first ultrasound unit, which successfully kept the water clear—until the unit failed in early 2023. Within weeks, the algae returned aggressively, prompting complaints from golfers and staff. With chemical treatments off the table due to Audubon regulations, course managers urgently needed a reliable, chemical-free solution to control algae and restore the pond’s appearance and health .

SonicPure reintroduced ultrasonic algae control to Needwood Golf Course with a modern Pulsar 4400™ unit. Within weeks of installation, the pond showed dramatic improvement—algae coverage decreased, and water clarity returned to healthy levels. Golfers and staff immediately noticed the difference, confirming the technology’s effectiveness.
Equipment Manager Cuan Hendricken remarked, “We never appreciated the unit’s effectiveness until it stopped working for a few weeks!” The renewed success at Needwood demonstrates how next-generation ultrasonic technology offers golf courses a dependable, sustainable way to maintain pristine water conditions without chemicals or downtime .

The SonicPure Solution
The Pulsar 4400 emits over 4000 unique ultrasonic frequencies into the water column, hitting the Critical Structural Resonance of the algal cell which breaks the cell bond, interferes with the reproductive or flotation mechanism and expedites the death of the algae cell. The outer membrane of the cell is retained, preventing the release of toxins.
